Overview

Elbow (forearm) crutches and underarm crutches are used when a leg must be partly or fully offloaded, for example after fractures, ligament surgery or joint replacement. Canes — single-point, offset or quad-base — give lighter support for users with mild balance or strength problems, and are usually held on the side opposite the affected leg.

Correct height and gait pattern make a large difference to safety and comfort, so they are best issued and adjusted by a physiotherapist. Accessories such as ferrules (rubber tips), ice tips, cane holders and comfort grips extend the life and usability of each aid.
